Webcam Resolution Test

Find out the highest resolution your webcam sends, and whether it stays smooth at 1080p or 4K.

Getting ready…

How It Works

Once you allow access, your camera’s picture appears live, at the size browsers ask for by default. If you have more than one camera, pick the one to test from the menu.

The test asks your camera for a picture larger than any webcam makes, so it sends the largest it has. Then it steps down through the standard sizes below that, from 4K to 480p, and counts the frames per second at each. It takes up to 28 seconds and needs nothing from you.

Your picture stays on this page. Nothing is recorded, uploaded or saved, and the camera goes back to its usual size when the test ends.

Interpreting Your Result

The headline is the largest picture your camera sent, with its frame rate. 1080p (1920 × 1080) is Full HD, the most video calls send. 720p (1280 × 720) is HD, common on laptop webcams. 4K (3840 × 2160) is for recording and streaming.

Every size the camera sent is listed with its frame rate. Under 24 frames per second, motion looks choppy. Many webcams slow down at their largest size, so the sharpest size that stays smooth is the one to pick in your video app.

Webcams also lower their frame rate in dim light, at every size. Face a window or a lamp while the test runs, or every size reads slower than the camera can go.

A camera that sends less than its box says is often held back by a USB hub: plug it straight into the computer and test again. A virtual camera, such as OBS, sends whatever size its software is set to.

Is the picture black, frozen or dark instead? The webcam test finds out why. Before a call, also check your microphone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What resolution is my webcam?

Run the test: the headline is the largest picture your camera sends to the browser, such as 720p or 1080p, with its exact size in pixels. That is the most a video app can get from it too.

Is my webcam 1080p?

If the test shows 1080p, or 1920 × 1080, yes. If it tops out at 720p, the camera is HD rather than Full HD, which is common on laptops. Plug a USB webcam straight into the computer before you decide, since a hub can hold it back.

How do I check my webcam’s FPS?

The test counts the frames per second your camera sends at each size. Run it facing a light: webcams slow down in the dark, so a dim room reads lower than the camera can go.

Why does my webcam look blurry on calls?

Many video apps send 720p or less by default, so even a 1080p camera can look soft. Clean the lens, add light in front of you and turn on HD video in the app’s settings. If the test shows less than 720p, the camera itself is the limit.

Why is my webcam choppy at 1080p but smooth at 720p?

Its largest size carries the most data, and many webcams can only send it at 15 fps or fewer. Pick the sharpest size the test shows as smooth in your video app, and plug the camera straight into the computer instead of a hub.
