How It Works
Your browser reads a controller the same way browser games do. Every button reports whether it is pressed, each trigger reports how far it is pulled from 0 to 1, and each analog stick reports its position on two axes from −1 to 1.
A controller your browser recognizes gets a diagram named for its family: A, B, X and Y on Xbox and most PC gamepads, Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle on a DualSense or DualShock 4, and B, A, Y and X on a Switch Pro Controller or Joy-Con. Each button lights while held and stays marked once registered. A controller it does not recognize gets numbered buttons and a bar for every axis instead.
Finish test then watches the controller for 5 seconds while it sits untouched. A button that registers with nobody touching it is stuck or pressing itself, the two button faults a browser can prove.
Nothing is installed and nothing leaves your device. It works over USB or Bluetooth in any current browser.
Interpreting Your Result
A button you pressed that never lit up is not reaching your computer. Press it firmly a few more times, then try another cable, USB port or Bluetooth pairing. If it stays dark, the contact under the button is worn or dirty.
A stuck button stayed down with nobody touching it. Press and release it a few dozen times and clean around its edge with a little isopropyl alcohol: sticky residue from a spilled drink is the usual cause.
A phantom press is a button that fires on its own. One stray press can be a knocked table, so test again. Repeated phantom presses usually mean a failing membrane or a damaged circuit board, which cleaning will not fix.
The Home button staying dark is normal. Xbox Game Bar, Steam and the operating system usually take it before any web page can see it, so it is not counted.
Every button works here but not in one game? The controller is fine. Check that game’s controller settings, or Steam Input, which can remap buttons game by game.
Character walking on its own, or the camera creeping? Measure each stick for drift with your hands off, then find the right deadzone for it.
Trigger bar not filling all the way? The controller trigger test measures how far each trigger travels and whether it returns to rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I test my controller on PC?
Connect it with a USB cable or pair it over Bluetooth, open this page and press any button: the page cannot see a controller until one is pressed. The diagram then lights each button you press and follows the sticks and triggers as you move them.
Can I test an Xbox controller here?
Yes. Plug it in with a USB cable, or pair it over Bluetooth: hold the small pair button on top of the controller until the Xbox button flashes, then choose it in your Bluetooth settings. Xbox One, Xbox Series and Elite controllers all work, with buttons named A, B, X and Y, LB and RB, and LT and RT.
Can I test a PS5 DualSense or PS4 controller here?
Yes. Plug it in with a USB cable, or pair it over Bluetooth: hold the PS button and Create (Share on a PS4 controller) until the light flashes, then choose it in your Bluetooth settings. Buttons are named Cross, Circle, Square and Triangle, and the touchpad click is tested too wherever your browser reports it.
What causes a controller to press buttons by itself?
Usually a stuck button, sticky residue from a spill, or a failing membrane or circuit board that makes contact on its own. The hands-off seconds at the end of the test catch all three: any button that registers while the controller sits untouched is faulty.
Why does a button work here but not in my game?
If it lights up here, the controller is sending it, so the problem is software. Check the game’s controller settings and button mapping, and Steam Input if you play through Steam. Some games also support only certain controllers.
Why is the Home button not lighting up?
Xbox Game Bar, Steam and the operating system usually capture the Xbox, PS or Home button before a web page can see it. That is why it is not counted in the test, and it staying dark is not a fault.
Why are my buttons numbered instead of named?
Your browser does not recognize this controller’s layout, which is common with older and third-party gamepads. It still reports every button and axis, but not which is which, so they are shown by number. Try another browser, or switch the controller to XInput or Switch mode if it has one.
Can this gamepad tester check stick drift?
It shows each stick’s position live, so you can see a stick that sits off center. To measure drift properly, averaged over several seconds with your hands off, use the stick drift test linked on this page.
