Mouse Acceleration Test

Slide your mouse between two stops slowly, then flick it fast. If the pointer goes farther when you flick, acceleration is on.

Getting ready…

How It Works

Pointer acceleration makes the pointer go farther when your hand moves faster. Windows calls it Enhance pointer precision, and it is on by default; Macs accelerate by default too. It helps on a small desk, but it makes aim inconsistent: the same hand movement lands in a different place depending on how fast you made it.

The test locks the pointer to the box, so it hides and never stops at the edge of the screen, and records how far it moves. You slide the mouse between two stops 4 times slowly, then 4 times fast. The stops make every pass the same distance for your hand, so any difference in how far the pointer went comes from speed.

The test reads the pointer after your system settings are applied, just as your desktop sees it. Nothing leaves your device.

Interpreting Your Result

The result is how far your fast passes went compared with your slow ones. 1.00× means no acceleration. 25% farther or more means acceleration is on. Between 10% and 25% is worth a second test: it can be mild acceleration, or a pass that missed a stop.

To turn it off on Windows 11, open Settings, then Bluetooth & devices, Mouse, Additional mouse settings (on Windows 10: Settings, Devices, Mouse, Additional mouse options), and on the Pointer Options tab clear Enhance pointer precision. On macOS 14 or later, open System Settings, Mouse, Advanced, and turn off Pointer acceleration; earlier versions have no switch for it. Mouse software such as Logitech G HUB or Razer Synapse can add acceleration of its own, so check there too.

If fast passes fall short instead, the sensor lost track of a fast movement. Clean the sensor window, try a plain mouse pad, and test again. If they still fall short, you flicked faster than the sensor can follow.

With acceleration off, your aim depends only on sensitivity. Moving to a new game? The mouse sensitivity converter carries the same aim over.

Clicks misbehaving too? The mouse double click test checks every button for a worn switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should mouse acceleration be on or off for gaming?

Most players turn it off, so the same hand movement always turns the same amount in game. Many games read the mouse directly and skip Windows acceleration anyway, but menus, the desktop and some games do not.

Does Enhance pointer precision affect games?

Only games that use the Windows pointer. Most shooters read raw input, which skips it. This test measures the pointer as your desktop sees it, so it shows whether the setting is on, not what every game does with it.

Why do I need two stops?

The browser cannot see how far your hand moved, only how far the pointer went. The stops fix the distance your hand moves, so slow and fast passes can be compared fairly.

Can I test a touchpad?

Yes, using the edges of the pad as stops. Touchpads almost always accelerate, and it usually cannot be turned off, so expect the test to find it.

Why did the test ask me to try again?

Either the slow passes covered different distances, which means a stop was missed, or the flicks were less than 3 times as fast as the slow passes, too close to tell acceleration apart.
